philadelphia stories of slavery

Philadelphia Stories of Slavery is an attempt to catalog all of the people, places and events of slavery in the Philadelphia area. A big job to be sure. Not one that can be done by one person or organization. It requires the assistance of anyone with an interest in the topic.

Here's how you can help. Please if you know of someone who has stories of slavery, if you have recorded stories yourself, or if you would like to record stories. I am currently recording our stories using two methods:

First, using either the mobile phone app developed by Findery or going directly to the Findery website I am writing and/or recording short stories that are tied to a location. The great thing about Findery is that it allows anyone who has the app on their phone to see the stories when they are near the location of the story. In addition each story is assigned a URL that allows for it to be viewed online as well. Anyone who uploads the app can record or write their own stories.

Second, I am recording longer stories told by people who know more about the subject. Earlier I recorded stories told by Phillip Seitz about the Chew Family's slave holdings. I then placed a story about Cliveden, the Chew Family home located in Germantown, on Findery. This will serve as the model for all of our Philadelphia Stories of Slavery as we move forward.
