engine 11

Engine 11 was a firehouse located at 1016 South Street in Philadelphia. From 1919 - 1952 the Philadelphia Fire Department was segregated. All African-American fireman were assigned to either Fireboat 1 or Engine 11.

All but one of these stories are told by retired fireman who worked at Engine 11, most during this time period. My father, Howard Feagans, was a fireman at Engine 11. My story about my father and his collegaues, Passing On, is included in this series.

In addition to these stories I had the opportunity to work on Scribe Video's Precious Places oral history project where we produced a short documentary, Engine 11: A Journey of Segregation and Discovery.
